Establishing Confidence When Interviewing for an Internship

Establishing Confidence When Interviewing for an InternshipEstablishing Confidence When Interviewing for an InternshipRecently I have been working directly with a number of students on how to prepare for an internship interview. The interview may be by phone or in-person, but basically preparing for either type of interview is quite similar so we can discuss both all in one sitting. Students who have done a lot of interviewing in the past are generally not as stressed about the process but for students who tend to be more introverted or who have not done too many actual interviews, interviewing can be quite a scary experience. Simple Tips I like to begin preparing students for interviewing by offering a few simple tips that I believe will help them. This often includes helping them change their perspective of the entire interviewing process. What often helps students in preparing is letting them know that they will also be interviewing the company as much as the company will be i nterviewing them. If they plan and prepare themselves as best they can for the actual interview, the determining factor often comes down to the interviewers impression and how well the interviewer feels that the student will make a good fit for the company. Oftentimes if the company doesnt feel like the student is a good fit for the organization, the student may also find that the culture of the organization is not the right one for them. Taking Control of the Interview My basic advice for students in preparing for an interview is to both begin and end the interview strong. Taking control as you walk in and out of the interview can increase a students chance of getting hired enormously. For example, as you enter the room be sure to give a firm handshake, maintain direct eye contact, smile, and say something like Its very nice to meet you and Id like to thank you for taking the time to meet with me to discuss my candidacy for the summer internship position currently open at Goog le. On the other hand, as you are leaving you will maintain the same firm handshake, direct eye contact, smile, and say something like, I have thoroughly enjoyed discussing the internship position with you and I know my knowledge, skills, and previous academic and work experiences would make me an excellent candidate for the job. Establishing Confidence Prior to Your Interview Once you feel confident in your non-verbal skills, its time to take a look at how you can prepare answers to interview questions in the most direct and professional manner. To do this you will begin by writing down your knowledge, skills, relevant college coursework, relevant experience, and personal attributes along with why you are the best person for the internship. I always recommend that students write down a list of things that they want the employer to know about them and then find a way to incorporate this information in their answers to whatever the interviewer decides to ask in the interview. What Do You Want the Interviewer to Know About You? As a student preparing for an interview, you will not know exactly what questions the interviewer will be asking. Even so, there are a number of questions you can prepare for that would be very similar to other questions that might be asked. In preparing, be mindful of what you want the interview to know about you. Sample Answer I am a very self-motivated individual and enjoy taking the initiative whether in a classroom or work setting. I pride myself in having a strong work ethic in combination with my excellent communication and interpersonal skills, which have proven invaluable in my courses and previous internship and work experiences. In my Introduction to Business course at my college last year, I led a group of 5 team members in researching and planning a presentation to a board of executives visiting the class. My summer internship last year gave me the chance to take theory and put it into practice. I not only led the co mpanys social media campaign but was asked to sit in with the VP of the company and present my views on student recruitment and what my thoughts were on the overall commitment the organization made in the local community. I was also a member of my high school basketball team for four years and captain senior year. At my college, I play intramural sports along with committing two hours per week to doing community service in the local community where I live. My ability to work well in a team and individually has contributed greatly to my success. The Importance of Thank You Notes Once youve successfully completed the interviewing process, be sure to send a thank you note within 24 hours to every person that interviewed you. In the note, you might re-iterate your interest in the internship and mention a few key things that you discussed that you really find exciting. Your knowledge and skills may be very similar to other students applying, so a well thought out thank you note coul d end up being the last thing that ends up getting you hired. brde but not least, the best piece of advice I can give is practice, practice, practice. You may practice with a career counselor at your college or with a family member of friend. Its important to practice out loud so even if youre practicing on your own, be sure to answer the questions out loud to help better prepare you in voicing your responses at the actual interview.

Manager Tips to Keep Millennial Employees

Manager Tips to Keep Millennial EmployeesManager Tips to Keep Millennial EmployeesYouve hired Millennials. Now how can you keep them around? If I could give you one bit of advice about dealing with the latest generation of employees to come under your management, it would be to remember those words. Things arent always what they seem with Millennial employees. If you are like fruchtwein business leaders, youve no doubt bedrngnisiced a trend in the way employees behave in recent years. Most likely you consider it a negative trend - too much entitlement, leid enough loyalty, no work ethic, only interested in themselves, and on and on. You should consider that perhaps behauptung are not negative trends, just different ones. Things arent always what they seem with Millennial employees. To better understand who your Millennial employees are and what drives them to succeed, perhaps its easiest to understand who they are not. You. Thats right. They may even be your offspring but in the wor kplace, they bear little resemblance to the you of yesteryear. Gen Xers (born 1965-1979) and Millennials (born after 1980) are operating in this world with a completely different perspective. Their definitions of loyalty, time, and success are often quite different from yours. Rest assured they do recognize all of unterstellung concepts and value them in very important ways. The key to your organizations future success is understanding how the Millennials view the world and using that knowledge to motivate them in a way that works. Heres a hint meet them where they are and they will achieve your underlying goals try to force them to fit your definitions and they will run for the door every time. So lets take a look at some of the pervasive myths about our youngest generation in the workforce and discuss why these changes are happening. You can tailor your workplace to meet your needs and your employee needs. In meeting these needs, the company will thrive. Myth Younger Generation s of Millennials Have No Work Ethic Reality Millennials have a self-centered work ethic. This is not necessarily the negative that it may seem at first. Millennial employees are dedicated to completing their task well. They have not been raised in a way that demands them to look around and see what should be done next. Instead, they ask what is my job and go about figuring the best, fastest way to complete that task. Then they consider themselves done. This is a key differentiator between your employees and yourself. The younger they are, the more your employees view their jobs as something to do inbetweenweekends. For most, early employment has nothing to do with a career path it is a way to earn money to have fun in their free time. And that is okay. When you understand what motivates your employees you are better able to set mutual expectations for success. Instead of being frustrated that your youngest employees are not interested in climbing your corporate ladder, embrace thei r true motivation - reliable spending money - and use it to your advantage. When you tell an employee, I understand this is not your lifelong career, but to earn the paycheck every weekhere is what I expect. They are much more likely to respond than if you try to motivate with promises of promotions and titles down the road. Understanding that being at the job isnt as important to Millennials as completing the assigned task also opens up new opportunities for motivation and reward. Younger employees are very likely to respond to offers of paid time off. A leading retail organization has recognized this new way of thinking with its Working Hard Card When managers witness an employee rising to a challenge, exceeding expectations or otherwise giving 110%, they can hand the employee a Working Hard Card on the spot. Each card is worth a set amount of paid time off to be used at the employees discretion. It is a simple strategy that rewards employees in the currency they value most - t heir time. Myth Millennials Dont Want to Put in the Hours to Get Ahead Reality Millennial employees are willing to put in the time to do the job, however, they are uninterested in face time. Gen Xers and Millennials view time as a currency. While Baby Boomers tend to see time as something to invest, the younger generations view it as a valuable currency not to be wasted. ansicht are the generations that demand work-life balance and paid time off. They want to get the job done, then put it behind them and enjoy life. Boomer managers have a tendency to lose the interest of their Millenial employees by looking too far into the future. Millennials live in the time frame based on right now. Their world has proven that nothing is a guarantee - from nationwide layoffs to war to soaring divorce rates, they have decided that theres not a lot you can count on. As a result, they are not interested in promotion plans for five years from now. They dont even want to know what will happen at the end of the summer. Life is uncertain. To reach the Millennial employee and reduce turnover, make it certain. Tell your employee that you have a plan. Take pains to ensure it is in a timeframe short enough for them to envision. Be prepared to fulfill your promise - once fooled, the Millennial employee is forever jaded. This approach feeds into their realitywhile simultaneously building trust and buying you more time. Reward small successes along the way, string these milestones together, and you will soon realize longer tenures among your staff. Myth Millennial Employees Have No Respect for Authority Reality Millennial employees have great respect for leaders and loyalty. But no, as a rule, they dont respect authorityjust because. For the younger generations, every ounce of loyalty and respect must be earned. But when it is earned, it is given fiercely. In fact, loyalty to the individuals leaders and theanfhrer is the number one reason Gen Xers and Millennial employees stay in a job, especially during the first three, tenuous years. Dissatisfaction with the boss is the number one reason they quit. So in order to increase retention, managers must take a flipped view onleadership- it is no longer enoughto hire the right peopleand show them the way, now you mustbethe right person to win their affection. Sounds a little touchy-feely for the workforce? Yes, but the more quickly leaders understand this new relationship, the faster you will see the rewardretention of Millennial employees. There is one big caveat to the be the person they want you to be approach to leadership, however. Millennials have a tendency to seek tight bonds they want a boss who is close, caring, and aware. And, you can be all that as the boss of a Millennial. But, be careful. It is very easy to cross the line fromthe boss as advocatetothe boss asfriend. That is a slippery slope. Friendship can be especially tempting in situations where managers and employees are close in age. When ac tivities outside of the office become too regular, too casual, or largely social in nature, it is time to examine how this will affect your role as a boss and leader. What Millennial employees need most from their boss is a guide - not a social life. Myth They Dont Want to Grow Up Reality Millennial employees really dont know how to grow up. The youngest generations in todays workforce are facing a delayed adulthood. They are getting married later, having children later and just generally facing the real world later. This isnt the result of a mutated maturity gene, it just is. And, if we are being completely honest about this situation, Boomers had a lot to do with why its happening. As parents, Boomers had a tendency to coddle their children and use their own good fortune to make sure their children didnt experience adversity. As career models, Boomers demonstrated the toll of working long hours andpaying their duesin a way that made their children less likely to follow in thei r footsteps. Millennials today look at the corporate ladder and think, there must be another way. Advice About Managing Millennials Dont waste time wishing your Millennial employees were different. Dont spend your energy comparing todays youth to the desires and drive you had at age 18. These employees are not a reflection of you, nor are they an earlier version of you. And again, that is okay. Your task is to take this new understanding and use it to reposition how youinteract with, motivate, andreward your staff. Take attire for instance. Your 18-year-old self would have gladly donned whatever uniform was necessary to fit the company mold. Be it pressed khakis and a tie or a specific corporate uniform, fitting in was part of the package. Todays youth wants to stand out. They want their individuality to shine through even when required to provide a consistent standard of service and performance. Balancing corporate needs with individual desires takes some creative thinking. Hom e Depot is one company that has addressed this dilemma at a very basic level - company uniforms. They simply require that all employees wear a standard Home Depot apron. Be yourself underneath (within reason) and show the customer that you are on the Home Depot team with this bright orange apron. Is there a standard that you can adopt to accommodate individual preferences? Something to think about. Not all change is bad. The myths surrounding todays young employees are not always what they seem. Attitudes toward work, life, loyalty, andrespect have all changed, but each is still considered valuable. In fact, some of the demands made by todays youth are creating positive benefits for employees in every generation. Flexibility and respect for the individual, as well as the organization, are good for everyone. Loyalty from younger employees, once earned, is long-lasting. Theadjustments you make to accommodate the changing attitudesof todays youth will be returned to you tenfold withdec reased turnover, improved morale, and measurable business results. And when the frustration mounts, just remember things arent always what they seem. Open your mind to the possibility that there is a benign, generational reason for the disconnect between what you want and what your Millennial employees are providing, and you may just find room to create a sharedvisionof success. - Cam Marston is a consultant who specializes in multigenerational communications and marketing, educating executives about the workplace expectations of different generations. New neuroscience reveals 7 secrets that will make you persuasive

New neuroscience reveals 7 secrets that will make you persuasiveNew neuroscience reveals 7 secrets that will make you persuasiveYou can painstakingly show somebody tons of bulletproof evidence and present flawless logical arguments but often they still wont change their mind. What gives? The dicke bretter bohren mssen is that the human brain is leid a purely rational computer. And when we ignore that, even the best of efforts to convince others can fall flat.FromThe Influential MindAs it turns out, while we adore data, the currency by which ur brains assess said data and make decisions is very different from the currency many of us believe ur brains should use. The problem with an approach that prioritizes information and logic is that it ignores the core of what makes you and me human ur motives, ur fears, ur hopes and desires. As we will binnensee, this presents a serious problem it means that data has only a limited capacity to alter the strong opinions of others. So the human brain doesnt work by strictly logical rules - but it does work by rules. And if we know what they are, we have a much better shot of framing our arguments in ways that other people will find convincing. So what are these rules? Dont look at me - Im the guy who presents heaps of data all the time thinking that makes a difference. (Sigh.) That said, I know where we might be able to get some answers Tali Sharot is a professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London and her new book isThe Influential Mind What the Brain Reveals About ur Power to Change Others.Shes identified 7 factors that influence our ability to influence. (I hope you dont mind if I try to change your mind about how to get others to change their mind.)Lets get to it 1) Prior beliefsDont ignore a parts current stance when trying to persuade.Military strategysays direct assaults against fortified defenses are stupid. The human brain is no different. Start off by telling people theyre wrong and youre already i n trouble. When our brains hear new info that agrees with our beliefs, we eagerly accept it. When we hear things that contradict our beliefs, our minds suddenly morph into defense lawyers looking for any conceivable flaw.So a few rounds of back-and-forth jousting doesnt weaken peoples opposition. Often it has a boomerang effect that ironically causes them to double down.FromThe Influential MindWhen you provide someone with new data, they quickly accept evidence that confirms their preconceived leidions (what are known as prior beliefs) and assess counterevidence with a critical eye. Because we are often exposed to contradicting information and opinions, this tendency will generate polarization, which will expand with time as people receive mora and mora information. In fact, presenting people with information that contradicts their opinion can cause them to come up with altogether new counterarguments that further strengthen their original view this is known as the boomerang effect.Y oure a pretty smart person, right?Well, that means youremoralikely to boomerang, not less. (If you responded by saying, No, Im a moron then youre off the hook.)FromThe Influential Mindthe greater your cognitive capacity, the greater your ability to rationalize and interpret information at will, and to creatively twist data to fit your opinions. Ironically, then, people may use their intelligence not to draw mora accurate conclusions but to find fault in data they are unhappy with.So how do we overcome this natural neuroscientific resistance? Dont begin by trying to prove others wrong. Start by finding common ground. When people who believe childhood vaccination is dangerous were presented with evidence that its not, the discussion went nowhere. When the focus was shifted to improving the health of children the conversation made progress.FromThe Influential MindInfluence behavior by building on common ground instead of trying to prove others wrong. Our instinct is to try to alter peop les beliefs and actions by introducing data to prove that we are right and they are wrong. It often fails, because in the face of facts that clash with their prior beliefs, people tend to come up with counterarguments or turn away. Instead, find arguments that rely on common ground. For example, telling parents who refuse to vaccinate their children that science has shown that vaccines do not cause autism did not alter the parents behavior. Instead, saying that vaccines would protect their children from deadly diseases was mora effective- the argument did not contradict their prior beliefs and was compatible with the common goal of keeping children healthy.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my bestselling bookhere.)So taking the right angle with your logic can be critical. But theres also a way to succeed that is usually considered the exact opposite of logic2) EmotionWe all know that our mood affects our judgment. Neuroscience research shows that we ac tually understand each other better when our brains are in sync emotionally.I tell a joke. You laugh. I laugh. And then the conversation seems to go more smoothly. The positive emotion synced our grey matter. This is one of the reasons that stories can be so powerful in convincing people even when rational arguments fail. You can have the best evidence in the world, but if youre emotionally out of sync with the other person they might not even really be hearing what youre saying.FromThe Influential MindLauri Nummenmaa, a Finnish neuroscientist who studies brain synchronization, writes that this may be one of the roles of emotion in neural synchronization- to promote social interaction and understanding, and to therefore enhance our ability to predict each others actions Emotion equates the physiological state of the listener with that of the speaker, which makes it more likely that the listener will process incoming information in a similar manner to how the speaker sees it. This is why eliciting emotion can help in communicating your ideas and having others share your point of view, whether you are conversing with just one individual or talking to thousands. So dont neglect to share feelings. Make a joke. Tell a story. Dont try and connect with reason until youve connected with emotion.FromThe Influential MindOne of the most powerful ways to communicate ideas effectively is to share feelings. Emotions are especially contagious by expressing feelings ourselves we are shaping other peoples emotional states, and by doing so we make it more likely that the people in front of us will take on our point of view.(To learn the science of how to take naps that will make you smarter and happier, clickhere.)This is all great for ideas. But how do we get people to change their behavior?3) IncentivesIf you want people to do something, emphasizing rewards is powerful. In one hospital the staff was only washing their hands thoroughly 10% of the time. (Ill pause a second to let your horror die down a bit.)But when researchers set up an electronic scoreboard that congratulated employees after a good scrubbing, compliance went up to 90%.FromThe Influential MindThe researchers placed an electronic board in each room giving the staff immediate feedback on how they were doing. Every time a doctor, nurse, or other worker washed their hands, the numbers on the board went up. These figures indicated how well the current shift was going what percentage of workers were currently washing their hands and what the weekly rate was. What happened? befolgung soared to almost 90 percentAnticipation of rewards usually beats fear when it comes to getting peoples brains to act. This is one of the reasons why video games can be so addictive.FromThe Influential MindIf you want someone to act quickly, promising a reward that elicits an anticipation of pleasure may be better than threatening them with a punishment that elicits an anticipation of pain. Whether you are trying to mo tivate your team to work harder or your child to tidy their room, remember the brains Go reaction. Creating positive anticipation in others- perhaps a weekly acknowledgment on the company website of the most productive employee or the possibility of finding a beloved toy under a pile of clothing- may be more effective at motivating action than the threat of a pay cut or a time-out.But its also vital to keep theotherside of this equation in mind. When you want people tostopdoing something, warnings about negatives prove more powerful than incentives.FromThe Influential Mindwhen your goal is to cause someone else not to do something- a child to avoid eating a cookie or an employee to avoid communicating confidential information to unauthorized individuals- warning of bad consequences may be more effective than promising rewards.(To learn how to best use caffeine - from a neuroscientist - clickhere.)Focusing on rewards is a much better way to tell people what to do. But, then again, peoplehateto be told what to do. So the answer to getting people to do what theyre told is not to tell them what to do 4) AgencyPeople like to feel in control. This isnt just a personal preference were biologically wired to seek control. It makes us happier and healthier across a number of dimensions.FromThe Influential Mind all else being equal, cancer patients who have a greater perception of control survive longer. Lower risk of cardiovascular disease has also been associated with a greater perception of control. This is not surprising the sense of control reduces fear, anxiety, and stress- all things that have a detrimental effect on our bodies.Former FBI lead international hostage negotiatorChris Vosssays its critical in any negotiation to give the other side a feeling of control. And the research agrees. So when you want to persuade, dont give orders give options. Dont tell ask and guide.FromThe Influential Mind giving people an opportunity to advise how their taxes should be a llocated increased the likelihood that they would pay them in full. To produce impact, we often need to overcome our instinct to control and instead offer a choice What is interesting is that the sense of control need only be that- a perception. It is better to guide people toward ultimate solutions while at the saatkorn time maintaining their sense of agency, rather than to give orders.(To learn how to use FBI hostage negotiation techniques to lower your bills, clickhere.)All of this stuff is great but itll be useless if theyre not really paying attention in the first place. So how do you make people want to listen to you?5) CuriosityIn general, our brains seek positive information and avoid negative information. This is true to an absolutely terrifying degreeWhen doctors tell people they may have Huntingtons Disease, very few actually follow through on getting tested. Other studies have shown similar results when it comes to HIV testing and breast cancer screening. When the news c ould be bad, people often dont want to hear it.FromThe Influential MindWhen potential carriers are asked if they intend to take the test, between 45 and 70 percent say yes. Yet most of them do not follow up on their explicitly stated intention. In fact, one study reported that when approached by the registries of testing centers, only 10 to 20 percent of people at risk for Huntingtons choose to register for the testSo if we frame the info we have as bad, people will often tune out. But if the same information is presented as positive, others often get curious. But how do you make themreallycurious? When we hear something that sounds good, but the information is incomplete, your brain wants to fill the gemeinsame agrarpolitik.Best example? Here are 7 clickbait headlines that will make you more curious.FromThe Influential Mindconsider online clickbait such as The ten celebrities you never knew were enthusiastic gardeners or The three politicians you never knew got a nose job. Those crea te gaps of knowledge in peoples mind that were not there to begin with. I never considered which celebrity adores plants or which politician used to have a crooked nose, but now that this gap of knowledge had been pointed out to me, I have an urge to fill it. Once we are told what we do not know, we want to know.So to draw people in emphasize the possibility of improvement and highlight the informational gap so they start asking questions.FromThe Influential MindReframe the glaubenszeugnis to highlight the possibility for progress, rather than doom. Our intuition is that if we have something important to convey, others will want to know it. This instinct is wrong. In particular, if the information is tied to a bleak message, many will actively avoid it- as was the case with preflight safety briefings. Reframe your message so that the information you provide will induce positive feelings (as the airlines did), highlight the informational gap you are filling, and show how the knowledg e can be used for the better.(To learn 6 rituals from ancient wisdom that will make you happy, clickhere.)So youre emphasizing the positive benefits that can come from listening to you. Thats great. Unless its not. Because theres an exception to this rule 6) State of mindWhen we feel threatened, were much more sensitive to negative information.FromThe Influential MindWe found that under threat, people were much more inclined to take in negative information- such as learning that the likelihood of being robbed is higher than theyd thought- than when they were relaxed. The more stressed they were, the greater their tendency to alter their views in response to unexpected bad news. (Stress did not affect the ability of good news to change their beliefs.) Under threat, we automatically absorb cues about danger. When we feel bad, our instinct is to play it safe - even if this isnt the smart move. Research shows that when underdog football teams start losing, they play more conservatively. And this is a terrible strategy when the competition is better than you are.FromThe Influential MindExamining over one thousand football games from 2002 to 2006, Brian Burke, the creator of Advanced NFL Stats, a website about football and game theory, found that underdog teams, like Tedfords, were less likely to vary their play. When they begin failing, they start minimizing risk. a conservative strategy means underdog teams are less likely to fail grandiosely, but they are also less likely to win.On the other hand, when we feel good were more inclined to take risks. Researchers theorize that positive emotions make people buy more lottery tickets. When you feel good, you feel lucky.FromThe Influential MindExamining lottery sales in New York City, Ross Otto and his colleagues from New York University stumbled on a peculiar pattern. When unexpected good events happened, more people bought lottery tickets. A local sports team unexpectedly won a game? Purchases escalated. An atypical s unny day in the midst of winter? abverkauf went up. This study is correlational- it shows a relationship between variables, but we do not know whether one factor is driving another. However, one theory is that an unexpected positive event, such as a bright, sunny day, makes people feel good. When you are joyful and relaxed, your mind is more likely to focus on how things may go your way. You may then overestimate your luck and be more inclined to take a risk.So align your presentation with the other persons mood. When theyre feeling down, theyll be more receptive to suggestions that seem safe. When theyre up, theyll be responsive to riskier ideas that have a big payoff.FromThe Influential MindA persons emotional mind-set will affect how they react to what you have to say. There needs to be a match between the opinions we are offering and the state of the individual in front of us. The same person will ignore your guidance one day but welcome it with open arms another, simply because their favorite football team lost last night or because the sun is shining on a winter day.(To see the schedule that very successful people follow every day, clickhere.)Finally, its important to keep in mind that when youre trying to persuade someone, the two of you arent the only ones who can affect the result 7) Other peopleWere social creatures. We love to think we act independently and arent affected by the opinions of others, but we are. Always and forever. This is so powerful that we follow the lead of others even when it can be life-threatening.FromThe Influential Mindevery year, 10 percent of kidney donations in the United States go unused. It turns out that when a donation is declined by one patient, whether because of the patients specific medical condition or their religious beliefs, the next patient on the list is informed that the organ was previously declined but is not told the reason. That patient then assumes that the organ is faulty and passes up a potentially life saving operation- as will the next patient, and the next. The flip side is just as true. When others are positive about something, were more likely to see it positively as well.FromThe Influential MindSean Taylor, who received his PhD from NYU and now works for Facebook, has studied how existing ratings and comments influence subsequent ratings. He found that if you manipulate the ratings so that the first review is glowing, the likelihood of other positive reviews increases by 32 percent and the final rating is enhanced by 25 percentWhen we frame our position as a positive and popular one it gives it more weight because, hey, all the cool kids are doing it.(To learn the four Stoic secrets to being more productive, clickhere.)Okay, weve covered a lot. Time to round it all up Sum upHeres how to use neuroscience to be more persuasivePrior Beliefs Dont start with how theyre wrong, start with common ground. (You may disagree with me on this but we both want to get better at persuasion, d ont we?)Emotion Make them feel and get your brains in sync. (Look Smiling puppies)Incentives Focus on rewards, not warnings. (Incentives will get you what you want, I promise.)Agency Give options, not orders. (Would you like to offer them two possibilities or three? Totally up to you.)Curiosity Fill the gap and focus on the positive. (The headline of this blog post was not chosen at random, my friend.)State of Mind If theyre feeling down, present the conservative option. If theyre feeling good, focus on the riskier upside. (Before I explain this further, how are you feeling today?)Other People Showing the popularity of your position helps. (Every smart person I know follows this rule.)Thats all the data you need to stop being reliant on data.We didnt have statistics and research thousands of years ago but people still convinced one another. We get the answers we need when we think like a computer. But we get the help we need when we dont forget were human.Join over 320,000 readers.Get a free weekly update via emailhere.Thisarticleoriginally appeared atBarking Up the Wrong Tree.New neuroscience reveals 7 secrets that will make you persuasiveYou can painstakingly show somebody tons of bulletproof evidence and present flawless logical arguments but often they still wont change their mind. When the focus was shifted to improving the health of children the conversation made progre ss.FromThe Influential MindInfluence behavior by building on common ground instead of trying to prove others wrong. Our instinct is to try to alter peoples beliefs and actions by introducing data to prove that we are right and they are wrong. Instead, saying that vaccines would protect their children from deadly diseases was more effective- the argument did not contradict their prior beliefs and was compatible with the common goal of keeping children healthy.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my bestselling bookhere.)So taking the right angle with your logic can be critical. But theres also a way to succee d that is usually considered the exact opposite of logic2) EmotionWe all know that our mood affects our judgment. Neuroscience research shows that we actually understand each other better when our brains are in sync emotionally.I tell a joke. You laugh. But how do we get people to change their behavior?3) IncentivesIf you want people to do s omething, emphasizing rewards is powerful. Compliance soared to almost 90 percentAnticipation of rewards usually beats fear when it comes to getting peoples brains to act. This is one of the reasons why video games can be so addictive.FromThe Influential MindIf you want someone to act quickly, promising a reward that eli cits an anticipation of pleasure may be better than threatening them with a punishment that elicits an anticipation of pain. Whether you are trying to motivate your team to work harder or your child to tidy their room, remember the brains Go reaction. When you want people tostopdoing something, warnings about negatives prove more powerful than incentives.FromThe Influential Mindwhen your goal is to cause someone else not to do something- a child to avoid eating a cookie or an employee to avoid communicating confidential information to unauthorized individuals- warning of bad consequences may be more effective than promising rewards.(To le arn how to best use caffeine - from a neuroscientist - clickhere.)Focusing on rewards is a much better way to tell people what to do. So when you want to per suade, dont give orders give options. Dont tell ask and guide.FromThe Influential Mind giving people an opportunity to advise how their taxes should be allocated increased the likelihood that they would pay them in full. To produce impact, we often need to overcome our instinct to control and instead offer a choice What is interesting is that the sense of control need only be that- a perception. It is better to guide people toward ultimate solutions while at the same time maintaining their sense of agency, rather than to give orders.(To learn how to use FBI hostage negotiation techniques to lower your bills, clickhere.)All of this stuff is great but itll be useless if theyre not really paying attention in the first place. When the news could be bad, people often dont want to hear it.FromThe Influential MindWhen potential carriers are asked if they intend to take the test, between 45 and 70 percent say yes. When we hear something that sounds good, but the information is incomplete, your brain wants to fill the gap.Best example? Here are 7 clickbait headlines that will make you more curious.FromThe Influential Mindconsider online clickbait such as The ten celebrities you never knew were enthusiastic gardeners or The three politicians you never knew got a nose job. Those create gaps of knowledge in peoples mind that were not there to begin with. I never considered which celebrity adores plants or which politician used to have a crooked nose, but now that this gap of knowledge had been pointed out to me, I have an urge to fill it. Once we are told what we do not know, we want to know.So to draw people in emphasize the possibility of improvement and highlight the informational gap so they start asking questions.FromThe Influential MindReframe the message to highlight the possibility for progress, rather than doom. Our intuition is that if we have something important to convey, others will want to know it. This instinct is wrong. In particular, if the information is tied to a bleak message, many will actively avoid it- as was the case with preflight safety briefings. Reframe your message so that the information you provide will i nduce positive feelings (as the airlines did), highlight the informational gap you are filling, and show how the knowledge can be used for the better.(To learn 6 rituals from ancient wisdom that will make you happy, clickhere.)So youre emphasizing the positive benefits that can come from listening to you. When we feel bad, our instinct is to play it safe - even i f this isnt the smart move. When unexpected good events happ ened, more people bought lottery tickets. A local sports team unexpectedly won a game? Purchases escalated. An atypical sunny day in the midst of winter? Sales went up. It turns out that when a donation is declined by one patient, whether because of the patients specific medical condition or their religious beliefs, the next patient on the list is informed that the organ was previously dec lined but is not told the reason. That patient then assumes that the organ is faulty and passes up a potentially lifesaving operation- as will the next patient, and the next. Time to round it all up Sum upHeres how to use neuroscience to be more persuasivePrior Beliefs Dont start with how they re wrong, start with common ground. (You may disagree with me on this but we both want to get better at persuasion, dont we?)Emotion Make them feel and get your brains in sync. How to End Every Work Day on a Happy Note - The Muse

How to End Every Work Day on a Happy Note - The MuseHow to End Every Work Day on a Happy Note At happy hour with a friend, you innocently start whining about the annoying comment your co-worker made earlier. Hours later, you both realize that the only thing youve spoken about the entire night is what you hate about your jobs. Whoops.Itd be quite remiss of me to say this should never happen. No positions perfect, and youll probably need to vent sometimes. But you dont want to let a so-so or badeanstalt day at work bleed into your life outside the office on a regular basis. Thats not good for anyone. And, I admit, its an easy trap to fall into. But luckily, its much simpler to prevent than you may think. How? By ending on a positive note. Ha, you say. Thats much easier said than done. Maybe. But I suggest you try these four tips before drawing that conclusion. 1. Review Your AccomplishmentsAt the end of each day, set aside time- even if only five minutes- to write down what you achieve d in the previous eight (or nine, or 10) hours. Your team members and clients are too busy to notice your daily victories, so its important to take a brief moment for self-congratulations, says William Arruda, author of Ditch, Dare, Do 3D Personal Branding for Executives. Its a great confidence builder, and it helps you quantify and assess your strengths. And dont worry if you only checked minor items off your list. The bigger wins cant happen without them. This short activity can give you a feel-good boost and help reinforce that you were productive. Even if it welches only somewhat productive. Because lets be real- believing you got nothing done isnt a warm and fuzzy feeling. Instead, it makes you want to shove your face into your couch and crawl under a blanket of shame. (Or is that just me?)And hey- if you really didnt do anything, take this time to tell yourself its OK. Because it is. Sure, this cant be a common occurrence, but an occasional lazy day is perfectly fine. Pat your self on the back for showing up, and go on your way.2. Get Ready for TomorrowI spend a lot of my leisure time contemplating my giant to-do list. Rather than relaxing and partaking in activities I enjoy, I let the tasks consume my every thought. Its not necessary for me- or you- to do this. Before you go home, prepare yourself for tomorrow. Outline your main action items that need to be completed. And review whats on your schedule, too. Are there any meetings to prep for? Any deadlines to meet? Form your list with those things in mind. Tonight, youll feel less burdened because youll know exactly what direction you need to head in upon returning. No longer will you have to waste your evenings thinking about it.Ive started doing this and, let me tell you, it makes me feel better at the beginning and end of each day. My Google doc remembers (and keeps track of) the important things, so I can be fully present when I catch up with those pesky New York housewives. 3. Organize Your SpaceIn c ollege, I usually couldnt sleep unless Id tidied up my room. The desk needed to be cleared, and all clothing had to be in drawers, the hamper, or at least hidden under my bed. Doing this made me feel more in control, less scattered, and like I was tying up the loose ends of my day into a nice little bow. The same goes for my office. When its more visually put together, so is my mind. I can head out the door feeling confident that Ive taken care of anything that may have popped up spontaneously.(Plus, cleaning always makes me feel like Im adulting a little bit better, which makes me feel relatively successful.)Im not saying to whip out the magic erasers and go all Mr. Clean here, but at least put things into piles and throw away any lingering trash. (If youre the laziest, these tips will be right up your alley) You wont leave feeling like youve forgotten something, and tomorrow you wont be taunted by the mess you walk into. 4. Have Something to Look Forward ToHappiness isnt something that just comes to you. You have to put in the effort. You have to set yourself up for happiness success. And one way of doing that is by scheduling things that youll look forward to. When you do this, you bring happiness into your life well before the event actually takes place, explains Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project (Revised Edition) Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun. In fact, sometimes the happiness in anticipation is greater than the happiness actually experienced in the moment.Meet up with a friend or family member. Start taking a class, such as improv (like me) or ceramics. It could even be diving into a good book. It doesnt have to be anything big, and you dont have to spend money. Just be intentional about consistently taking time to do something youll truly enjoy. When you schedule time for fun activities into your calendar, youll think about that rather than wo rk. We have much more ownership over how our days play out than we think. Sure, there are going to be off ones where youre thrown super random and sometimes downright discouraging curveballs. But for the most part, youre in charge. When you take back control of the wheel, you can start to steer it in a more positive direction and end each day on a happy note. Good luck

Engineers Help Fight Opioid Addiction, Part 2

Engineers Help Fight Opioid Addiction, Part 2 Engineers Help Fight Opioid Addiction, Part 2 Engineers Help Fight Opioid Addiction, Part 2Part 1 of Engineers Help Fight Opioid Addiction covered how medical researchers are developing new treatments to lessen our dependence on opioid painkillers and prevent overdoses. This part looks at the technologys different applications.Chronic pain affects over 100 million Americans and its causes include everything from neuropathic pain from spine disorders, to diabetic nerve pain, to chronic migraine, which affects as many as 30 million patients in the U.S. alone.Other sources of chronic pain are post-surgical and post-amputation pain caused by trauma to the severed nerves at the amputation or surgical sites. behauptung two types of pain impact nearly 500,000 Americans each year, and most of these patients are being treated with pharmaceuticals and other traditional pain management methods. For You Can Medical Devices Replace Painkillers? The ampu tation pain market is a large market, and the market drivers are really diabetes and peripheral vascular disease, says Jon Snyder, CEO of Neuros Medical, a startup based in Cleveland that has licensed the kilohertz neurostimulation technology from Case Western since 2009, using it in its Altius treatment ordnungsprinzip. Theyre projecting market numbers basically to double by the year 2050, so this will continue to be a really underserved market that needs new solutions. The Neuros Altius System consists of an implantable generator with an integrated rechargeable battery, cuff electrode, and external devices. Image Neuros MedicalThe Neuros system consists of an implantable generator thats about the size of a pacemaker, with an integrated rechargeable battery, cuff electrode, and external controllers that allow the patient and their doctor to manage the system remotely. It is installed in the body alongside the peripheral nerve that needs treatment. When the patient ne eds pain relief they simply switch the system on, with what looks like a small television remote, for an automated treatment session of 30 minutes. Once thats over, the system shuts down and the nerve itself comes right back on and starts transmitting again as normal, though the effects of treatment have been show to linger well after treatment ends. Our system produces a high-frequency electrical signal in the 5-10 kHz range thats directed via the nerve cuff lead, which is placed around a nerve or targeted set of nerves that were looking to block, Snyder says. It stops the potassium channels from opening and closing, so the nerve is rendered intransmissible. Its very similar to the effect of lidocaine on the nerve, as far as whats happening. The only functional difference is that neurostimulation achieves this effect via an electrical nerve block, whereas lidocaine is based on a chemical nerve block. According to the companys internal testing, the treatment has shown pain reduction o f about 75 percent to 80 percent, along with narcotic pain medication reduction of about 90 percent.Other commercial uses for kilohertz frequency alternative current blocking include the vBloc Therapy system, which is making use of the technology to partially block the vagus nerve in the digestive tract to help control obesity, as well as Nevro, used to treat chronic back and leg pain. The body is a natural system, Bhadra says. This is what biomedical engineers do. We come up with things that work on that million-year-old system and get results.Tim Sprinkle is an independent writer.

The Definition of Curriculum Vitae

The Definition of Curriculum VitaeThe Definition of Curriculum VitaeA curriculum vitae is a document used to list ones qualifications and apply for employment. It works in much the same way as a resume and provides detailed information about an individuals educational and work history. Often called a CV for short, it is much mora comprehensive than the typical resumeand therefore can be much longer. There is no limit to how long, but a CV must include only information that is needed to illustrate your academic and professional experience. A lengthy CV isnt any better than a short one if it contains fluff or irrelevant data. A job applicantseeking an academic job, like a teaching appointment at a college or university or a research position, for example, should always use a CV. They are also used when applying for jobs outside the U.S., but in that context, the CV is more similar to a standard resume. If you are unkoranvers about which application document to send to a prospective emp loyer, use the job announcement to guide you. It will usually state which document the institution wants. What Should You Put on Your CV? Like a resume, your CV must begin with your contact information, such as your complete name, address, telephone number and email address. You must also indicate your area or areas of academic interest. While a resumes focus is on your experience and has an overview of your educational background, for example, schools attended and degrees earned, your CV should include a comprehensive account of your academic history, including the title of your dissertation or thesis. It must contain details about all publications, research projects and presentations to which you have contributed. You should also list any grants, academic awards and other related honors youve received. The employment and experience section of your CV should contain your teaching and research positions, both paid and unpaid. In addition to jobs, include any relevant internships and volunteer experiences here. Following that section, discuss your memberships in scholarly and professional associations and include offices you have held, if any. Finally, you will also need to provide a list of references, along with their contact information, on your curriculum vitae. These are the people who have written letters of recommendation about you. Doingthis is also in contrast to a resume, which never contains this information. CV Mistakes to Avoid Avoid the temptation to get creative. Your resume should use a simple font, like Helvetica. Times New Roman is okay, but many people consider it boring. Use white or another neutral colored paper with black ink for the hard copies of your resume.Check the format. Consult the job announcement to see what format an employer wants your CV to be in. If it isnt indicated there, use a standard one, like .docx.Only include factual information. Lying on your CV will only result in negative consequences. Given how small most areas of academic interest are, any attempts at using inaccurate information will likely follow you throughout your career. Dont get too personal. Stay away from personal information like hobbies and physical attributes.Keep it professional. Make sure you use an email address that sounds professional. A silly, vulgar or suggestive one could get your CV tossed.Edit, then edit again. Check and then double-check for any typos, misspellings, grammatical errors and other mistakes. Have someone who has an excellent command of the language, and an eagle eye, proofread your CV for you. A mistake-laden document will make you look sloppy and careless, and that certainly isnt the message you want to convey to a potential employer. A few typos may be all it takes to get your CV tossed into the circular file. Overall, keep your CV targeted, and use concise language to get your experience across to the reader. Your CV should tell your prospective employer the story of your past work experience, and why youre the one who can best fill their needs for the job.
